Reda, Giovanni

Born in Cosenza, Italy (January 15, 1935) and passed peacefully at Mariposa House Hospice (December 9, 2022). Husband of 59 years to his beloved Rita Carpino (predeceased in 2017). Much loved father to Gerry (Heather), Frank (Louise), Linda Dorey (Steve) and Rosanne.  Adored Nonno to Brandon, Brett and Luke Dorey and Kyla, Tianna and Sam Reda.

Giovanni was the second eldest of 13 siblings:  Filippo (predeceased - Toronto), Antonio (Edmonton), Lina Gregorini (Toronto), Rosina Reda (Hamilton), Carmine (Toronto) and Luigi, Francesco, Mario, Maria, Giuseppe, Salvatore (predeceased) all of Italy and Gina Vizza (Australia).  Brother-in-law to all of their spouses as well as Rita’s family - Filomena & Santo Soda (Italy), Giuseppe (Joe) and Maria Carpino (all predeceased), Michele (predeceased) Rosina Carpino, Maria (John -predeceased) Borrelli (all of Orillia) and Carmine (Avril) Carpino (Cookstown). Zio (uncle) to many loving nieces and nephews.

Despite being encircled by his large family in Italy, Giovanni and Rita immigrated to Canada in 1966 with their young family where they then surrounded themselves with an expanded community of extended family and friends here in Orillia. Giovanni was a hardworking brick mason who perfected his craft but his true labour of love was his garden.  As a self-taught musician, he entertained the family for many years and enjoyed that music to the end. The last several years were stolen from him as he struggled with Alzheimer’s but he will always be remembered as a quiet and gentle man.  He was kind, had a sense of humour and was deeply committed to his family.  Rest peacefully Dad.  Our heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Waypoint Hospital’s Horizon program and Mariposa House Hospice as well as the assistance of Helping Hands and the VON program.

Visitation Friday December 16th at Mundell’s Funeral Home, 79 West St., N., Orillia, from 5-8 pm (all welcome to join Parish prayers in the parlour at Mundell’s at 4:45 pm).  Funeral Mass at Guardian Angels Church, 115 West St., N., Orillia, on Saturday December 17th at 11:00 am immediately followed by a reception at Hawk Ridge Golf & Country Club at 12:30 - 3:00 pm.  Burial at St. Michael’s Cemetery on Monday December 19th at 11:00 am.
